Teaching Engagements

Teachers across the US and abroad utilize my DNA Series technique as a teaching aid for their young art students. The foundation of my DNA Series style is composed of geometric and organic shapes, which are the foundation for most types of art.

I have visited schools in the past, but that is no longer viable. However, I offer interactive 30 minutes to 1-hour Zoom sessions for an honorarium. In these sessions, I expose children to my DNA series art style and show them samples of works in various stages. I also promote art as a “no bully” activity as every child’s art is unique and the differences in their interpretations are what makes it beautiful. I answer any and all questions, and my objective is to be a lasting impression in their creative minds.

Reggie did 2 zoom schoolwide assemblies at our school-- one for K-5 and another for 6-12. It was engaging and fun-- the kids and parents loved it! Reggie is full of so much heart and passion, and it shines through in the way he talks about his artwork, and in his interactions with the kids as they asked questions. We structured the presentation as part slideshow and part interactive art lesson. Through the slideshow he shared some of his favorite pieces of artwork, and the process and passion behind creating them. He lead the kids through a fun, guided step-by-step art lesson. This lesson was appropriate for all ages-- from Kindergarten to even adults! He pulled shapes out of a bucket and one by one the kids drew (or painted) those shapes onto their paper. Then they filled in the shapes with color and patterns. Reggie stressed the idea that even though they used the same shapes, their artwork will all be different and unique depending on the colors and patterns they choose. Throughout the presentation Reggie weaved in messages of diversity, creativity, respect, confidence, and following your heart. I can't recommend this enough, it was an amazing, interactive assembly that was a big hit in our school. Many of the parents were talking the next day about how great it was! If you can get Reggie to your school, either in-person or virtually for a class lesson or schoolwide assembly, do it!

I was recently introduced to Reggie Laurent’s artwork online and thought his “DNA Style” series would be a perfect lesson to cover with my virtual fourth grade students.  They enjoyed learning about him, viewing his artwork, and trying to create their own piece using geometric and organic shapes.  I reached out to Mr. Laurent through email to let him know how much the students enjoyed the lesson and to see if he would be interested in seeing their work.  I had no idea how amazing his response would be!  He wrote back quickly and was genuinely enthusiastic.  He sent wonderful pictures of his work and even created a video for my students.  It absolutely made my day and gave me something truly special to share with them.  When I sent some samples of their work, he took the time to make another video using their names.  My students were blown away when I showed them the videos, they just couldn’t believe Reggie Laurent saw their work and mentioned them.  I know this experience will stay with them and encourage them to see art as accessible and possible.  I can’t wait to have a virtual lesson with him next year so my now third graders can meet him and also benefit from his art.  I truly appreciate the time, care, and effort he put into our correspondences and can’t stop talking about it.  Reggie Laurent is so thoughtful, humble, and talented.  It’s clear he is passionate about art and children!
